We all share the road, but did you know that roadside accidents account for thousands of injuries every year in Florida? To keep our community safe, it is vital to understand the requirements of the Move Over Law.
What You Need to Do
When you see a vehicle stopped on the shoulder with hazard lights, flares, or emergency signals, Florida law mandates two specific actions:
Move Over: If you are on a multi-lane road, you must safely vacate the lane closest to the stopped vehicle.
Slow Down: If changing lanes is unsafe or you are on a two-lane road, you must reduce your speed to 20 mph below the posted limit. (If the limit is 20 mph or less, slow down to 5 mph).

What’s at Stake?
This law is designed to protect everyone, from police and tow truck drivers to your fellow neighbors in disabled vehicles. Failing to comply is a moving violation that results in:
Financial Penalties: Fines typically ranging from $60 to $158.
License Points: Three points added to your driving record, which can impact your insurance rates.
In 2024 alone, failure to move over contributed to over 200 crashes in our state. Let’s do our part to bring that number down.
Stay safe, give space, and protect lives.
